An onset of symptoms can occur during pregnancy or up to one year after childbirth and can appear suddenly or gradually. PMADs is the #1 complication of pregnancy and childbirth and affects 1 in 5 women of any culture, age, socio-economic class, profession or race. A Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder can emerge due to changes in biology, physiology, environment and expectations.

Founder Christy R. Gomez is a NY State Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Perinatal Mental Health Provider with over 6 years of experience in the mental health field. Christy received training on Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders in November of 2018 to curate her work exclusively for women in the perinatal period. As a clinician Christy saw how unresolved trauma and unaddressed mental health issues impacts a woman’s life and how it transmits to her motherhood experience.

Unbeknownst to Christy, she was subconsciously motivated to help mothers, in the perinatal period, because of her own unaddressed symptoms related to her Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (postpartum depression/anxiety) which she identified almost one year after giving birth to her second son. This discovery led her to taking a year off, from providing direct clinical care, and on a journey of healing and growth as a woman, a mother and a clinician.

Christy has dedicated her time to receiving training in different specialities, such as Perinatal Mental Health, Breathwork, Somatic Experiencing, Emotion Focused Therapy and Complex Trauma to provide an integrative clinical approach to her clinical work. Oftentimes unresolved traumas and unaddressed mental health issues go unnoticed for years because of the hustle and bustle of life that can distract us from ourselves and causes us to be in constant auto-pilot and survival mode.

The everyday occurrences of life and societal expectations, of needing to just push through the hard times, can distract people from unaddressed conflicts that can lead to mental health illnesses. In women, Christy has noticed that entering the season of motherhood prompts women to begin reflecting on their life and admit that it's important for them to address unresolved conflicts and trauma so they can be the women and mothers they desire to be. Christy enjoys working with women in this stage because she truly believes motherhood is a pathway to change and with the right support any woman can be the mother they were designed to be and intend to be.

Motherhood is a HUGE life transition that can induce stress, fear and anxiety, which is ALL normal within a time frame! However, when the experience becomes full of distress and disruption in every day functioning professional help is warranted.

At The Woman, The Mother we aim to help mothers feel equipped, empowered and supported during their motherhood journey.

You are enough and you are capable!
